When I started the Detox Program I had a feeling of drowning in stress, anger, 

impatient feelings, confusion.  I had very minor bouts of depression and even 

though I always pulled myself out, the times of those feelings seemed to get

Taking Your Life Back from Painkillers

“Most any unwanted emotion can be made ‘numb’. But the catch is that a drug doesn’t know the difference between a good or bad emotion and there is certainly a whole array of very desirable emotions that get shut down as well.”

This is a very broad category and includes any substance taken in an attempt to dull or kill physical pain. It could be as simple as aspirin or as addictive as morphine. One often sees these prescriptions for such brand name drugs as Vicodin, Percocet and Darvocet or more generic names like Oxycondone or Hydrocodone.

Some form of physical pain is almost always behind the use of these drugs but for anyone who has been on them, they know the need for these drugs continues long after the physical pain is no longer a factor. In essence they are now addicted.

Clearly, there is also the case of chronic physical pain in which there is no real relief from pain unless one continues to take the drug. But the fact remains that a person still becomes addicted to the substance. The underlying cause of the pain could never be resolved or was never fully addressed.

Still another use of these pain killers is in the category of recreational use, meaning, they are taken for the numbing effect of getting high. They are usually obtained illegally or prescriptions for them are misused such as someone getting the drug from a person who has a legal prescription.

Pain Killers Kill More than Physical Pain
One should realize that these pain killers work on the central nervous system and shut off much more than pain. They shut off emotions as well. Most any unwanted emotion can be made “numb” But the catch is that a drug doesn’t know the difference between a good or bad emotion and there is certainly a whole array of very desirable emotions that get shut down as well.

Happiness, joy, feelings of and the ability to express love are commonly lost for those chronically on pain killers. People on pain killers for any length of time can appear “wooden” or “unfeeling” and one gets the idea when talking to them that they are “not really there”.

The Way Back

Coming off pain killers is not easy but with proper help it certainly can be done. You should be under

a doctor’s care and at the Institute for Detoxification and Health we do just that. We always try and do what we can to work with a person on an out-patient basis. Some cases might require that one is handled on an in-patient basis and if so this can be arranged with our help. If there is an underlying pain or physical condition that has never been resolved, that can be addressed as well. But only after a full evaluation of your particular situation, can we determine the best handling.
